Construction of Kaplan turbines in Mendoza

Project: Construction of 10 Kaplan turbines in Mendoza

The Mendocinean company IMPSA provides the Tocoma Project in Venezuela, which consists in supplying electromechanical equipment under “turn-key” conditions. They are 10 turbines of the Kaplan type, of 223 MW and 8.6 m of diameter, which have the highest power so far designed in the world in this kind of equipment. This is a real record of Argentinean technology at international level, as it is the central of its kind with the highest global efficiency. Such efficiency, which considers the turbine, the generator, the transformer and the auxiliary systems all together, will certainly exceed 92% when the central is tested.

As a bidding condition, the turbine model was tested in the laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausane, in Switzerland. Of all the tested machines only two of them complied with all the requirements demanded by the Client, and the one presented by IMPSA was the best.

The differences between the efficiency measurements carried out in the laboratories of IMPSA and of Switzerland were centesimal, demonstrating that the Hydraulic Research Laboratory of the Company is one of the best of its kind in the entire world.

Besides, the construction of a laboratory for the testing of hydraulic machines was also engaged.

Project Description
The Tocoma Project is the last of the hydroelectric developments which forms part of the exploitation of the Bajo Caroní Hydroelectric Complex, together with the Guri, Macagua and Caruachi centrals, which are already in commercial operation.
The Tocota Project is located at about 15 Km. downstream of the Guri Hydroelectric Central, in the Municipalities of Raúl Leoni and Piar, Bolívar State.
The Machine Storehouse will accommodate 10 generator units of the Kaplan type of 216 MW each, with an installed capacity of 2,160 MW.
Once all the works have been executed, a dam will be created at 127 meters above sea level, flooding and area of 87 km2.
At present Tocoma is under construction, and it is estimated that the first unit will be ready for commercial operation by the year 2012, whereas the Central will be finished by the year 2014.
